Pauper January Events

The winner of last month's poll was pauper so... We will have two pauper drafts and two pauper constructed events. Pauper drafts will be January 4rd and 18th. They will still be 8 dollars and will happen at the same time and place (Hampton Courts Clubhouse Mondays at 6 P.M.). In these drafts you open your pack and pocket the rare. It is yours to keep. Then you draft as normal. If you are lucky enough to open a pack with two rares/mythics,you keep both and the pack will have a random common added. So the draft decks you build will be completely rare free.

ColumbiaFreeMagic will be hosting Extended Pauper Tournaments on Friday, Jan 8th and Friday Jan 22nd at the Hampton Courts Clubhouse, starting at 6pm.

They will be free events but there will be Zendikar boosters as availiable prize support. Top 4 and one random person will be able to choose between a DCI foil OR packs.

The basic rule of Pauper Magic says that only Commons are legal.

Pauper Legality Rule: A card is legal in a Pauper format if it is a common in that format. (Cards that are common in another format like Legacy, but uncommon in all Extended set printings, are not legal).

Timeshifted (Purple rarity symbol-TSB) cards are rares for Pauper purposes (since that is their equivalent rarity, from a frequency point of view) and so are not legal.

The following card sets are permitted in Extended Pauper tournaments:

Ninth Edition
Tenth Edition
Magic 2010
Mirrodin
Darksteel
Fifth Dawn
Champions of Kamigawa
Betrayers of Kamigawa
Saviors of Kamigawa
Ravnica: City of Guilds
Guildpact
Dissension
Coldsnap
Time Spiral
Planar Chaos
Future Sight
Lorwyn
Morningtide
Shadowmoor
Eventide
Shards of Alara
Conflux
Alara Reborn
Zendikar
Worldwake (effective February 5, 2010)
Rise of the Eldrazi (effective April 23, 2010)

The following cards are banned in Extended Pauper tournaments:
* Aether Vial
* Disciple of the Vault
* Sensei's Divining Top
* Skullclamp
# Cranial Plating

The following cards are restricted (only one copy per deck/sideboard may be played) in Extended Pauper tournaments:
# Ancient Den
# Great Furnace
# Seat of the Synod
# Tree of Tales
# Vault of Whispers
# Darksteel Citadel

* From http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Resources.aspx?x=judge/resources/sfrextended
# From http://pdcmagic.com/faq.html#2-4
2.4 Is there a banned or a restricted list in PDC?
Yes. Cranial Plating is banned in all formats and Artifact Lands (Ancient Den, Great Furnace, Seat of the Synod, Tree of Tales, Vault of Whispers, Darksteel Citadel) are restricted to one of each in Extended. This is to weaken Affinity decks, which might be metagame-warping otherwise, while allowing one of each Artifact Land to be used by decks in Extended that can find a use of them.

$144 League Challenge Questions and Answers

Just a few updates and clarifications on exactly how our league works:

1)EVERY tournament you attend at Qdoba earns you a point for league standings. It does not matter how well you do. If you play at least three rounds, you get a point.

2)There are additional points for finishing in the top 4 of any tournament. A first place finish earns 4 points in addition to your participation point. A second place finish earns earns 3 additional to your participation point. A third place finish earns 2 additional points to your participation point. A fourth place finish earns one additional point to your participation point. If you are looking to make up points, then coming to a Monday night booster draft is a great idea. A top four finish out of a 12 person draft may be twice as easy as a top 4 finish out of a 24 person standard tournament, but it counts just as much for the league.

3)There are NO additional charges to the tournaments even though there is now additional prize support. Standard events are (and always will be) free. Drafts are (and always will be) 8 dollars.

4)There are between 8 and 10 tournaments left (depending on how many FNMs we have) between now and December 28th (the last eligible tournament). It is NOT too late to get into the race.

5)The league prizes are AWESOME! Winners will get to choose from the mystery prize (worth over $60), a set of two cool playmats with life trackers (worth $30), a set of ten DCI foil premium cards (worth $30), or a double draft set of six zendikar packs (worth $24).

Two Headed Giant Update

Good News! We have figured out the logistics for the two headed giant booster draft scheduled for next Monday December 7th. Magic Ambassador Greg had the following good idea: starting with the lowest DCI rated limited player, each player will be able to pick a partner from the others present. So if players want to pick their buddy or girlfriend or whoever, they have that choice, but if they want a higher rated player to be their partner they can receive that help. So bring your 8 dollars and be ready to draft and then have some two headed giant fun Monday. This will be a great opportunity to learn from and/or talk some trash with your friends. Here is a link to some rules explanation if you are wondering exactly how two headed giant works: http://bluegrassmagic.com/2hg_rules.htm
Please let me know if there are any questions I can answer. See you there.

Announcing League Play!

Tonight (Sunday 11/29) was the first event that will count towards league standings. Each event you play at least three rounds of will earn you one point towards your total. A 4th place finish earns one additional point. 3rd place earns two additional points. 2nd place earns three additional points and a 1st place finish earns 4 additional points. So the most points any one event can earn you is five total. What do all these points add up to? Whoever has the most at the end of the year (Decemeber 28th is our last event of the year) will have their choice between a mystery grand prize, a double draft set, two playmats, or a set of 10 different DCI foil cards. The second place finisher will have next pick of what is left and so on until the four prizes have gone to the top four finishers. If there is a tie between two or more players the first tiebreaker will be the number of tournaments attended. The second tiebreaker will be the number of two headed giant tournaments attended. The third tiebreaker will be winning percentage against players involved in the tie. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Poll Results

Thanks everyone for voting in the poll. Thanks also to the people who talked to me in person about what format they were hoping for. So here's the deal, every Monday at 6 P.M. we will do an 8 dollar draft. The second and fourth Monday we will then play as normal. However, the first and third Monday of each month we will use our draft decks to play two headed giant! So to be clear, Monday November 30th will be a normal draft. Monday, December 7th will be our first two headed giant event. We will continue to alternate from there. More details will follow. Please let me know if there are any questions I can answer in the meanwhile.

PreRelease and Launch Party!

Thanks everyone for coming to so many tournaments! Because of you, we have qualified to have both a Worldwake (the next magic set) PreRelease and a Launch Party with exclusive promos. Both will be draft events and take place on Sundays at Qdoba's. The PreRelease will be on January 31st and the Launch Party will be the next week on February 7th. We will start drafts at 1 P.M. instead of 4:30 though. What can be better than trying out a new set with your friends? Doing 8 dollar drafts and getting a promo card each time! More detail will be shared as they become available

Ongoing Drafts

Good news! The first draft was a success. There will be drafts every other Monday at 6 P.M. from now on. The next one will be Monday November 30th. They will stay at 8 dollars a person and there will be free prizes for everyone who plays. Additional prizes will also be given to top finishers.

Top Decks Feature (Legacy)

Legacy is a really fun format that lets you play cards from any set in magic except for the silver bordered Unglued and Unhinged. This can be a little intimidating if you are a new player. Here are some of the decks that have been doing well lately at Columbia Free Magic. Feel free to copy them or make your own monster that will crush them. Happy building!

1)G/W/B Rock or "Junk". This deck uses efficient creatures like tarmogoyf and Knight of the Reliquary along with card advantage spells like Hymn to Tourach to grind out advantageous board states where they have at least one morethreat than their opponents has answers. Here is a decklist http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=37047 Potential Weaknesses: Hyper aggressive decks like Mono Red Burn or glacially slow decks like Landstill

2)Dredge. This deck abuses it's graveyard by using a card called Bridge from Below that makes zombie tokens even when it is in the graveyard and several "dredgers" like Golgari Grave Troll that repeatedly put useful cards into the graveyard. Decklist: http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=37034 Potential Weaknesses: Anything that can repeatedly remove graveyards. Once is not enough.

3)Affinity. This deck makes lots of artifacts very quickly and boosts their power using an equipment called Cranial Plating or sacrifices some to make one huge creature using an artifact creature called Arcbound Ravager. They also play a card called disciple of the vault that hurts their opponent whenever an artifact dies. Decklist: http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=37037 Potential Weaknesses: Decks with both pinpoint removal like Swords to Plowshares to deal with Disciple and mass removal to destroy lots of artifacts at once.

4)Landstill. This control deck plays lots of counters and an enchantment called Standstill that lets a player draw three cards if their opponent plays a spell. By playing lots of lands that can turn into creatures like Mishra's Factory, Landstill can win if neither person plays spells. Decklist:
http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=36639 Potential Weaknesses: Decks that win quickly without relying on one key spell to resolve and/or decks that feature creatures with island walk that its lands can't block.

There are lots more decks, but these are a good starting point to consider. Have fun!
